Scientists in Hefei, capital of East China’s Anhui province, got official approval for the construction of major facilities for the China Fusion Engineering Test Reactor (CFETR), marking a milestone for the megascience project.

The National Development and Reform Commission (NDRC) gave nod to a report on the feasibility study of the project a couple of days ago, according to the Hefei Institute of Physical Science under the Chinese Academy of Sciences, which leads the project.

The project has been listed in the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan for Science and Technology Development. It is also the first project in the Hefei National Comprehensive Science Center.

Situated in the city’s Luyang district, the facilities will be completed in 5-plus years. Construction of support facilities kicked off on Dec 14, 2018.

The ultimate goal of CFETR is to build an "artificial sun" using fusion technology to help tackle the world's energy crisis.
