Huangmei Opera Festival Kicks off in Anqing

Liu Qibao, vice chairman of the National Committee of the CPPCC, declared the opening of the 8th China (Anqing) Huangmei Opera Festival in Anqing, East China’s Anhui province, on Thursday.

Jointly sponsored by the Ministry of Culture and Tourism and the Anhui provincial government, the event has brought together 29 theatrical troupes from 16 cities of five provinces- Anhui, Hubei, Jiangsu, Jiangxi and Guangdong.

The festival is slated to run through October 8. Up to 49 opera shows will be staged in three local theaters during the period. The admission fees are 10 yuan ($1.45).

In addition, another 16 shows are expected to entertain audiences free of charge.

The opening and closing ceremonies as well as major performances will be live broadcast on the Internet.

Besides the vice chairman of the country’s top political advisory body, senior officials present at the opening ceremony included Zhao Shi, vice chairman of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, Xiang Zhaolun, vice culture and tourism minister, and Yu Aihua, head of the Publicity Department of the CPC Anhui Provincial Committee.
