Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences

Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASHIPS) is one of the most important science and education centers of the Chinese Academy of Sciences. It was situated at Dongpu Island by the side of the beautiful Shushan Lake in the western part of Hefei city, covering an area of 2.65 square kilometers.

Hefei Institute of Physical Sciences of the Chinese Academy of Sciences hires more than 2,500 employees. Among them, more than 2,000 are scientists or researchers who hold respective professional titles. It offers positions to post-doctoral fellows in 5 different fields. Its 12 programs and 25 programs respectively lead to the granting of doctoral degrees and master’s degrees. The number of registered postgraduate students is more than 1,600. The institute has set up more than 20 well-furnished laboratories, research centers and 10 large-size technical physics experiment platforms. Here is the world’s first all-superconducting spherical torus Tokamak experimental device independently designed and developed by Chinese scientists. It is not only one of China’s major nuclear research bases but also a fusion research center established in China by the World Laboratory. In addition, the institute holds the auxiliary heating systems on EAST, and stable high magnet field. It is China’s first super-conducting machine HT-7 Tokamak, nuclear Fusion Research Center sponsored by the World Laboratory, and a Research Center of the Third World Academy of Science.

 

Hefei National Synchronous Radiation Laboratory (NSRL)

Approved by the former National Planning Commission in 1983, National Synchrotron Radiation Laboratory with Cylindrical Particle Accelerator (NSRL) is the first National Laboratory of its kind and up to now the only one of national significance that was constructed in a university throughout China. The large-size scientific facility is a national multidisciplinary open research platform.

Synchronous Radiation, as an excellent new kind of light source, can be used in many basic research fields and application research fields such as physics, chemistry, material science, life science, information science, mechanics, geoscience, medical science, medicine, agronomy, environmental protection, metrology, light carving, and super-subtle process. It is an important base for knowledge innovation, talent training and high-tech R & D.

The laboratory undertakes a number of major projects of National Natural Science Foundation, military-related project under 863 Program is one of the topmost plans of scientific research closely related to the construction of the army and national defense, Ministry of Science, National Fundamental Research Program (973 Program), the National Climbing Program and other research projects. NSRL has been awarded First Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award, Top Prize of Scientific and Technological Progress of Chinese Academy of Sciences, and Anhui Scientific and Technological Progress Award. It has made significant contributions to basic research and national defense construction.

 

National Laboratory for Quantum Information Sciences

On August 25, 2016, Anhui and Chinese Academy of Sciences signed a framework agreement on comprehensive cooperation of constructing China’s National Laboratory for Quantum Information Sciences. It is considered as Anhui’s No. 1 Project of Scientific Innovation. Anhui and Hefei jointly set aside 4 billion yuan as a special fund. This effort is meant to support China’s major platforms for quantum information research and quantum information industrialization. During the period of the “Thirteenth Five-Year Plan”, the construction of China’s National Laboratory for Quantum Information Sciences will be completed, from which to drive the country’s leadership in the quantum space though the country has already achieved a number of advances in the quantum space. It is of benefit to transfer the achievements made in quantum information science in Anhui, to attract world’s top ranking talents of innovation and to boost the province’s reputation of innovation. It is an important measure to improve Anhui’s regional innovation capacity and to promote Anhui’s development based on transformation.

 

Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Microscale

Hefei National Research Center for Physical Sciences at Microscale was formerly Hefei National Laboratory for Physical Sciences at Microscale, approved by the Ministry of Science and Technology in November 2003. In November 2017, the Ministry of Science and Technology officially approved the establishment of a national research center. The center is the country’s only national research institute covering the five major disciplines of physics, chemistry, biology, materials and information.

The laboratory is the research base of “quantum control” under the national major research program, one of the first national high-level overseas personnel innovation entrepreneurial bases, the advanced group of national education system awarded by the Ministry of Education, and the advanced cultural innovation team awarded by the Chinese Academy of Sciences. The laboratory has made a series of innovation progress at international advanced level in the fields of quantum physics and communication, quantum control, single-molecule science, high temperature superconducting materials, nano-science and technology in recent years.

It has won two First Prizes and ten Second Prizes of the National Natural Science Awards, and 19 prizes of relevant provincial and ministerial awards. The achievements were selected by the Academicians of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Chinese Academy of Engineering as “China’s Top Ten Science and Technology Progress News” 15 times. It is the only research institute in China that has won the most selections.

 

National Key Laboratory of Fire Science

The National Key Laboratory of Fire Science (used to be called State Key Laboratory of Fire Science, or SKLFS for short) is the only laboratory of its kind receiving funding and administrative support by the national government. SKLFS is regarded as a key component of China’s science and technology research system.

It serves as a world-known base for top-level basic research and applied basic research development. It passed the appraisal by the national authorities in 1995. In 2003, SKLFS was evaluated by Ministry of Science and Technology for the first time and was graded as an excellent state key laboratory among other 29 laboratories of national significance. SKLFS functions under the guidance of an academic committee which is made up from a broad base of senior researches in fire and disaster research field. Facing the national significant demand of fire safety and world’s cutting-edge research of fire science, SKLFS conducts frontier interdisciplinary researches that combine state-of the-art knowledge and approaches of different disciplines to explore fire dynamics evolution of fire disaster and key technologies of fire prevention and control to continuously make innovative, fundamental, strategic and forward-looking contributions to the national fire safety. Currently SKLFS has 47 researchers including one academician, two chief scientists of Project 973, and four young researchers who are awarded national outstanding youth fund.

The laboratory was awarded one First and two Second National Prizes for Science and Technology Progress, one second prize for National Natural Science, two National International Scientific and Technological Cooperation Awards, one National Patent Gold Award, and Anhui Provincial Major Science and Technology Achievement Award, as well as more than 20 provincial or ministerial awards. Its research results have been widely used in important venues such as the Great Hall of the People, the National Grand Theatre, the Beijing Olympic Stadium, and the Shanghai World Expo.

 

National Key Laboratory of Particle Detection and Electronics

In order to promote the development of the important basic discipline of “particle detection technology and electronics”, High Energy Physics Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences and the University of Science and Technology of China officially establish “Laboratory of Particle Detection and Electronics in April, 2005.

On October 13, 2011, the National Key Laboratory of Particles Detection and Electronics was officially approved to start construction. The laboratory aims at the national demand and the development direction of the discipline, focusing on advanced nuclear detection technology, cutting-edge electronics, large capacity data acquisition and processing system. The priority of the research and exploration is to carry out frontline particle detection and electronics technology and method, leading the overall development of the discipline in the country. With the emphasis on the long-term development of particle physics and nuclear physics experiment, the laboratory provides technical and personnel support for the country’s future possible big science projects; conducting application technology research and promoting technology transfer. It also has a wide range of international cooperation in the field of particle detection and electronics and strives to reach the international leading level.

 

National Engineering Laboratory for Speech and Language Information Processing

National Engineering Laboratory for Speech and Language Information Processing is the only national level research and development platform for the Chinese voice industry. In June 2011, National Engineering Laboratory for Speech and Language Information Processing was officially approved by the National Commission of Development and Reform. The laboratory builds technological R. & D. platform for speech and language technology research, and technical application, designing and developing platform, validation and test platform and technology application major demonstration platform on the basis of iFLYTEK’s current research. Relying on USTC, the laboratory constructs speech synthesis research section, speech recognition research section, natural speech processing research section and intellectual human-computer interaction research section to further integrate the source core technology research resources and to achieve advanced scientific and technological achievements in urgent need by the industry. The laboratory will continuously improve the core competitiveness of intelligent speech technology and industry.

 

National Engineering Laboratory for Brain-inspired Intelligence Technology and Applications

In December 2016, the University of Science and Technology of China was approved by the National Development and Reform Commission of China to take the lead to construct the National Engineering Laboratory for Brain-aspired Intelligence Technology and Applications, in a joint effort with Fudan University, Shenyang Institute of Automation of Chinese Academy of Sciences, Microelectronics Institute of Chinese Academy of Sciences and Baidu Company.

The laboratory is tasked with developing AI technology by learning human brain mechanisms and promoting the domestic industry development of brain-inspired chips, brain-inspired robots and other emerging industries. It serves as a brain-inspired intelligence technology research platform as well as doing R&D and engineering of brain-inspired cognitive and neural computing, brain-inspired chips and system and brain-inspired intelligent robots.

The development of brain-inspired intelligence can reveal ways of information processing in the human brain, which is conducive to completing AI technology systems and promoting industry development.

In addition, the laboratory is to take responsibility for promoting the industrialization development of AI technology in China and conducting R&D on core chips and operating systems for brain-inspired intelligence, as well as of robots based on the neural network.

 

National High Performance Computing Center (Hefei)

National High Performance Computing Center (Hefei) is one of the five national high performance computing centers in China (Hefei, Wuhan, Chengdu, Shanghai, Beijing). The purpose of the center is to establish China’s high performance computing base and to popularize the application of domestic dawn series parallel machine in order to promote the development of China’s high performance computing level and the development of the national computer industry. The main research direction of the center is the parallel and distributed algorithms, approximate and probabilistic algorithms, high performance computing, parallel and distributed computing environment, parallel and distributed system structure, network design and routing algorithm based on parallel and distributed computing application system. The center has an influential academic teach with a number of well-established professionals who have made significant achievements in the field of parallel and distributed computing. Currently, the center has 2 professors and 5 associate professors.
