A total of 14.15 million rural residents in east China’s Anhui province made a living outside their hometown in 2017, 40,000 of which worked abroad, statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics showed on Wednesday.

The number of migrant workers working within the province reached 4.43 million, or 29.9 percent of the total, compared to 28.6 percent in 2016.

8.15 million found jobs in more developed Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces and Shanghai, accounting for 57.6 percent of the total, the NBS said. There were 58,000 fewer working in those regions in 2016.

As Anhui increases foreign communication, more and more migrant workers went abroad for work. Last year, the province sent 40,000 migrant workers abroad, while the number merely stood at 18,000 a year earlier.

More migrant workers opt for jobs in the province, as income gaps between local workers and workers in richer Zhejiang and Jiangsu provinces and Shanghai are narrowing and employment opportunities are on the rise as a result of rapid economic growth these years.
