Anhui's top market regulator awarded geographical indication (GI) certification to nine products in the first quarter of 2017, bringing the total number of GIs to 109, Anhui Administration for Industry and Commerce said.

The newly-recognized signature products included Yuexi’s black hogs, Hanshan’s green tea and Wangjiang’s soy sauce.

As of March 31, the eastern Chinese province was ranked 11th in the country, with a total of 109 GI products.

The province saw a year-on-year rise of 28 percent in the number of GI products, statistics from the administration showed.

In recent years, the local government has stepped up efforts to ensure the timely registration of trademarks related to agricultural products, and guide regional participation in scouting for and registering GI products.

Under a 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020) on the province’s branding strategy, Anhui aims to give the GI status to 170 products by 2020.

The GI status both indicates that the products enjoy a good reputation, and also functions as a guarantee that local producers follow strict production processes and safety practices.
