Innovation is the first driving force to lead development. On the morning of April 26, Xi Jinping visits the Institute of Advanced Technology under University of Science and Technology of China in Hefei.

He is shown achievements made by high-tech enterprises during the last few years in areas ranging from artificial intelligence to public security, and from drones to alternative energy. Researchers introduce the speech synthesis technology, and Xi asks about its simulation rate, costs and commercial prospects. Xi gives positive remarks on its application in speech translation, bi-lingual education, international cooperation etc.

Xi talks with enterprise and institute representatives from intelligent language research, intelligent robot development, equipment manufacturing, new materials, biomedicine, intelligent new energy etc., and inquiring about their technological development, commercialization of scientific and technological achievements and application prospects.

President Xi Jinping is greeted by two human-like robots independently designed and developed locally. The two life-like robots named “Xiao Man” and “Jia Jia” are interacting with Xi when he approaches them during the inspection.

“I’m very happy to see you, dear President, I wish you happiness every day,” says Jia Jia, who has been dubbed “robot goddess” for her good-looks.

Xi praises technicians’ work on innovation, and says the country must rely on innovation to boost high-end manufacturing as China has now entered the “new normal”.

He says that Hefei has nurtured so many excellent talents and is a place of innovation. He further encourages those present to keep up the good work and wishes everybody good luck in scientific innovation.

Xi Jinping stresses that self-led innovation, as the leading concept among the five development concepts, must be promoted under the country’s fundamental principal of opening-up policy.

At the Beijing-Shanghai Quantum Communication Network Operation Center, Xi listens carefully to CAS academician Pan Jianwei’s introduction and comments on the R&D of quantum communication as “very promising and important.” Xi says the achievements show that inputs in emerging industries have been prompt and strong and have already led to obvious results.

On the afternoon of April 26, Xi Jinping visits the Spin Magnetic Resonance Laboratory at University of Science and Technology of China. CAS academician Du Jiangfeng tells General Secretary that half of the young scientists were graduated from the Gifted Teenager program that was launched by Anhui-based USTC enrolling talented teenagers under the age of 15 in 1978. Xi Jinping praises, “The younger generation will surpass the older one. There is no limits to the youngster’s promise.”

Xi Jinping emphasizes that Anhui is a province abounds in science resources and USTC is to advance knowledge and educate students in science, technology, and other areas of scholarship that will best serve the nation and the world. Its spirit of interdisciplinary exploration has fueled many scientific breakthroughs and technological advances. He hopes Anhui and USTC will make more contribution to the country’s modernization and construction. Back
