Education in Anhui

Covering an area of 140,100 square kilometers, with a population of 70.592 million, Anhui Province lies in the eastern part of China. Basing on its profound cultural foundation, abundant scientific, technological and educational resources, the province endeavors to improve the quality and expand the influence of its education.

During the period of the 12th Five-Year Plan, remarkable achievements have been made in the reform and development of Anhui’s education. More children got access to education and the educational resource allocation has become more reasonable to narrowing the gaps between urban and rural areas, regions and schools. In the five years, 5.516 million people have received secondary or higher education; the average years of education of newly added labor force have risen from 12.3 to 13.3.

The goal set by Anhui in the 13th Five-Year Plan is to conduct quality-oriented education across the board, ensure that more children, including left-behind children, children of rural migrant workers who live in cities, handicapped children and other special groups, will get access to high-quality public education and basically realize educational modernization in 2020.

The province will also advance international educational exchange and cooperation. It continues to carry out the program of “Study in Anhui” for international students, improve the mechanism of overseas study and increase chances for government-funded overseas study. It will deepen cooperation with Germany and Russia in education. The construction of Sino-German education demonstration base will be enhanced. It will encourage teacher and student exchanges and mutual recognition of credit among Anhui-based universities and foreign universities. Universities in the province are supported to cooperation with overseas universities to run high-level institutions of higher education or educational program and cultivate talents badly needed in the province or the country. More efforts will be made to improve Confucius Institutes to popularize Chinese and disseminate Chinese Culture and the Hui Culture.

By the end of 2017, institutions offering postgraduate programs totaled 21 with 57,761 students enrolled. There were 109 institutions of higher education, and the general tertiary education enrollment was 1.147 million. The gross enrollment rate of higher education was 47.7 percent. 761 thousand students studied in 359 secondary vocational schools (technician training schools excluded) There were 1.085 million students in 662 senior secondary schools with the gross enrollment rate of 90.5 percent, 2.022 million students in 2,810 junior secondary schools with the enrollment rate of 99.96 percent and 4.405 million pupils in 8,108 elementary schools with the enrollment rate of 99.99 percent. Graduates from adult educational institutions numbered 400 thousand.
