Xuancheng lies in the south-eastern part of Anhui Province, bordering Jiangsu and Zhejiang. It covers an area of 12,340 square kilometers and has a population of 2.8 million. It is made up of five counties, one county-level city and one district: Langxi, Guangde, Jingxian, Jixi, and Jingde County, Ningguo City and Xuanzhou District.

The counties (city, district) are famous for different specialties: Langxi is well-known for its green tea, Guangde for its bamboo products, Ningguo for its pecan and Yuanzhu (a special kind of bamboo), Jingxian for bamboo paper, Jingde for ramie, Jixi for sericulture, and Xuanzhou District for preserved dates, mushrooms, crab and papaya.

Xuancheng, established as a county 2,000 years ago, is known for its abundant cultural relics especially ancient poems about the city. The city is one of the nation’s most important bases for producing the Scholar’s Four Treasures, namely the writing and drawing brush, the ink stick, the ink slab and Xuan paper.

It is a tourist city featuring tranquil villages surrounded by clear rivers and green hills. It has the National Nature Reserves for Chinese Alligator, the only one in the world.

It is also a vibrant modern city. The vigorous development of its leading industries including automobile & equipment manufacturing, new energy & new materials, and food & medicine is turning the city to be one of the most promising and dynamic areas in the Yangtze River Delta. The city is listed as Top 100 in China's urban innovation competitiveness.
