Anhui saw improvements in air quality between January and May as blue sky days in the eastern Chinese province accounted for 81.3 percent of all days during that period, local environmental authorities said on Monday.

The Department of Ecology and Environment of Anhui Province has recently released a list ranking 16 prefecture-level cities by air quality in the Jan-May period. Huangshan topped the list, followed by Chizhou and Xuancheng.

Huangshan’s air quality index reached 2.86 and its proportion of blue sky days stood at 99.3 percent. Blue sky days refer to days when the air pollution index is lower than 100.

Huaibei, Bozhou and Huainan were at the bottom of the list. The air quality index in the lowest-ranked Huaibei reached 5.10, and 65.8 percent of days were rated as blue sky days.

The department also released a list ranking 61 counties and districts by average density of PM 2.5, the fine particulate matter that is hazardous to human health. Yixian and Shexian counties, whose average concentration of PM 2.5 reached 23 micrograms per cubic meter, shared the first place, followed by Jingde and Jixi counties. Jieshou ranked 61st, with 63 micrograms PM 2.5 per cubic meter. Its average concentration of PM 2.5 dropped from that during the same period a year ago.
