East China’s Anhui province has made historic achievements during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20) with the victory over the building of a moderately prosperous society in all respects in sight, local authorities said at a press conference on Tuesday.

The province’s gross domestic product (GDP) grew at an annual average rate of 8.2 percent from 2016 to 2019. In 2019 alone, it ranked 11th in the country, up from the 14th spot in 2015. In terms of per capita GDP, the province climbed to the 13th place from the 25th, said Zhang Tianpei, head of the Anhui Provincial Development and Reform Commission.

The province’s industrial structure has been upgraded as the output of strategic emerging industries made up 35.5 percent of the total industrial output in 2019, up 13.6 percentage points from 2015.

Anhui was included in the national strategy for integrated development of the Yangtze River Delta during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20). The province has shifted from “full participation” to “deep integration” in the course of the regional integration, promoting cooperation in areas such as sci-tech, industries, ecology, infrastructure, public services and opening up, Zhang said.

The China (Anhui) Pilot Free Trade Zone was inaugurated in September, marking a major step in Anhui’s development into a new inland pacesetter of opening up.

In 2019, the province’s foreign trade volume stood at nearly $70 billion, and it attracted investment from 88 Fortune Global 500 enterprises.

“People’s sense of fulfillment, happiness and security has been enhanced,” Zhang said, adding that more than 3 million rural residents were lifted out of poverty and over 3 million new urban jobs were created during the 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), according to the official.

The province also made major strategic gains in controlling the COVID-19 pandemic, perfected the public health system and improved local people’s health, Zhang said.
