Located in northwest of Anhui Province, Bozhou City has a jurisdiction over three counties and one district—Guoyang, Mengcheng, Lixin Counties and Qiaocheng District. By the end of 2017, the city had a population of 6.508 million.

It’s a city with a long history and profound culture. A lot of sages and famous figures in Chinese history were born here, including Laozi, the founder of Taoism, Zhuangzi an influential philosophy, Cao Cao, a famous politician, militarist, litterateur and one of central figures of the Three Kingdoms period, Hua Tuo, a highly-skilled doctor who invented “anesthesia powder” and “Wuqinxi”, and Chen Tuan, a famous scholar in the Song Dynasty who was proficient in poetry, literature, calligraphy, painting and the study of changes. The small city is dotted with historical sites and cultural heritages. The Yuchisi ruins can date back to 5000 years ago in the Neolithic Age. The Opera-performing Stage, a cultural heritage under national protection, is famous for its brick and wood hollow engravings. The ancient tunnel used by Cao Cao to transfer troops is honored as “the underground Great Wall”.

The city is blessed with rich natural resources, especially herbal medicines. Over 400 species of herbal plants are planted, and the planting area reaches 773,300 hectares. It has the world largest market for traditional Chinese medicines.


Wuqinxi (the exercise of the Five Animals) originated in today’s Bozhou city of Anhui province. Practiced in China for 1,800 years, it is proved to improve a person’s immune system and helps prevent illness. It was inscribed into China’s list of national intangible cultural heritages in 2011.
It was said that this set of physical exercise was developed by Hua Tuo, a well-known doctor in ancient China. He observed the movements of tigers, deer, apes, bears and birds, and combined them with the ancient energy-conserving method to create a unique exercise known as Wuqinxi.
"The bear movements are good for the stomach and spleen. The tiger soothes pain in the waist and back. The deer movements can reduce fat around the waist, and the ape is good for cardiopulmonary functions. Bird movements can help prevent arthritis," explained Hua Yi, the 59th inheritor of Wuqinxi.
In Bozhou, there are more than 100,000 people taking this exercise, and it was performed and spread in the United Nations, the United States, Switzerland, Hong Kong region, and other places.
