At present, China has built three comprehensive national science centers, being respectively located in Huairou of Beijing, Zhangjiang of Shanghai and Hefei of Anhui.
The reason why Anhui can be ranked among the three first-tier cities of Beijing, Shanghai and Shenzhen lies in its competitiveness of the science and technology.
Anhui is reputed for producing China’s first VCD and microcomputer in those days and the world’s first quantum communication satellite “Mozi” and the world’s thinnest 0.12 mm touch glass nowadays.
Talents are the driving force for the continuous improvement of Anhui’s innovation ability. Its regional innovation ability is ranked forefront in the country for 7 consecutive years.
Anhui’s rich scientific and educational resources have cultivated a group of talents. Today, Anhui’s higher education has entered the fast track of development, with 110 universities such as the University of Science and Technology of China. The post-graduate and undergraduate student population studying in the province’s 110 universities reached more than 1.2 million, ranking Anhui 9th in the country.
In addition, Anhui has more than 6,000 scientific research institutions. The number of CAS and CAE academicians is 34. The province has more than 3 million highly skilled professionals and technical personnel.

As a national backbone software enterprise, iFLYTEK is a listed enterprise that is specialized in intelligent voice and language technology, and artificial intelligence technology research.
Although the enterprise encountered problems such as insufficient funds and technological breakthroughs when it started up, Anhui Province and Hefei City provided a good condition for iFLYTEK’s development. This led to the agglomeration effect of artificial intelligence in Hefei and in turn promoted the international and domestic scientific and technological status of Anhui and Hefei.
By 2025, the number of users of intelligent voice and artificial intelligence internet products will reach 1.5 billion. The business income of the enterprises in “China Voice Valley” will exceed 200 billion yuan.
Anhui’s intensive innovation platform has attracted a large number of talents. At present, Anhui is pursuing efforts to enhance its innovation platforms by launching the “Four Ones” to serve as platforms that house a comprehensive range of innovation and expertise. As such, the innovation platforms include Hefei Comprehensive National Science Center, Hefei Binhu Science Town, Hefei-Wuhu-Bengbu National Independent Innovation Demonstration Zone, and Comprehensive Innovation Reform Pilot Province.
In addition, Anhui is the densest locality in science research installation except Beijing. Relying on “national” scientific research institutes such as the University of Science and Technology of China and Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, Anhui has built three giant devices: synchrotron radiation light source, fully superconducting Tokamak and steady high magnetic field. Three additional giant devices are under construction, including comprehensive research facilities for key systems of the main engine of the fusion reactor, high-precision timing, and future networks. It is planned to install three giant devices to preparatorily research advanced light source, atmospheric environment detection and strong light and magnetic integration to form a cluster of scientific apparatus with Hefei as the center and serving the whole country. The number of completed devices ranks Anhui first in the country.
Kuang Guangli, president of Hefei Institutes of Physical Science, Chinese Academy of Sciences, told First Financial and Economy that these scientific installations have attracted many talents because some frontier scientific and technological exploration must rely on scientific apparatus.
For example, international scientific research based on high magnetic fields is very active, and 19 achievements related to magnetic fields have won Nobel Prize since 1913.
The “steady state high magnetic field experimental device” putting into use in Hefei has helped a lot of domestic scientific research. It is most likely that China’s Nobel Prize will come from these frontier explorations in the future.
Innovation has also brought about the agglomeration of emerging industrial clusters. Anhui has actively developed 24 major emerging industrial bases and cultivated five emerging industries: electronic information, intelligent household appliances, new energy vehicles, industrial robots and artificial intelligence.
At present, there are more than 5,400 high-tech enterprises in Anhui. In 2018, for the first time, the output value achieved by high-tech enterprises exceeded 1 trillion yuan. The output value of strategic emerging industries accounted for more than 35 percent of the industries above designated size and the added value of high-tech industries accounted for more than 40 percent of the industries above designated size.
Anhui has embarked on the way of high-quality development led by innovation, and its main economic and social indicators are obviously better than the national average.
