In 2020, the province has faced complicated situations at home and abroad, heavy blows from the COVID-19 epidemic and damages brought by floods rarely seen in the history. Under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era, the province fully implemented the spirit of the 19th National Congress of the CPC, the second, third, fourth and fifth plenary sessions of the 19th Central Committee of the CPC. Anhui followed the import speech made by Xi during his inspection tour in Anhui and coordinated efforts to advance the epidemic prevention and controleconomic and social development as well as flood control and relief. The province took solid steps to stabilize employment, financial operation, foreign trade, foreign investment, domestic investment and market expectations (six areas), and fully safeguarded employment, basic living needs, operation of market entities, food and energy security, stable industrial and supply chains and the normal functioning of primary-level governments (six fronts). As a result, the province maintained a stable and sound economic and social development and the 13th Five- year Plan was completed successfully, which have laid solid foundation for high-quality development in 14th Five-year Plan period and construction of modern Anhui in all respects in the new era.

I. General Outlook

According to preliminary accounting, the gross domestic product (GDP)[2] of the province in 2020 was 3,868.06 billion yuan, up by 3.9 percent over the previous year. The total volume of GDP in Anhui ranked 11th nationwide and the growth rate of it ranked 4th nationwide. By industries, the value added of the primary industry[3] was 318.47 billion yuan, up by 2.2 percent; that of the secondary industry was 1,567.17 billion yuan, up by 5.2 percent, of which, the industrial added value reached 1,166.22 billion yuan, up by 5.1 percent; and that of the tertiary industry was 1,982.42 billion yuan, up by 2.8 percent. The ratio of the three economic sectors was adjusted from 7.940.651.5 to 8.240.551.3. The estimated overall labor productivity[4] reached 88,317 yuan per capita, increasing by 4,284 yuan per capita over the previous year.

The new driving forces got boost. Among the industries above the designated size, the value added of the high technology industry and the manufacture of equipment grew by 16.4 percent and 10.3 percent over the previous year, accounting for 43.8 percent and 33.5 percent of that of all industrial enterprises above the designated size respectively. The value added of the strategic emerging industries increased by 18 percent over the previous year, of which, that of the information technology industry of new generation, the manufacture of high-end equipment, the new materials industry, the biotech industry, the NEV industry, the new energy industry and the energy-saving and environmental protection industry was up by 28.5 percent, 9.3 percent, 14.8 percent, 22.7 percent, 23.1 percent, 29.6 percent and 8.9 percent respectively. Among the sales in the market, the online retail sales[5] reached 277.58 billion yuan, up by 20.1 percent, of which, the online retail sales of physical goods were 237.51 billion yuan, up by 24.3 percent, accounting for 13 percent of the total retail sales of consumer goods, or 2.3 percentage points higher than that of 2019. Among the investment in fixed assets, the investment in high technology industry[6] increased by 9.7 percent, 4.6 percentage points higher than that of the total investment.

Regional coordinated development of economy has been achieved. The gross product of Hefei Metropolitan Circle[7] reached 2449.99 billion yuan, up by 4 percent over the pervious year; that of Hefei, Wuhu and Bengbu National Innovation Demonstration Zone reached 1588.15 billion yuan, up by 4 percent; that of Wanjiang Urban Belt Demonstration Zone Undertaking Industry Relocation was 2,556.45 billion yuan, up by 4.1 percent; that of the six cities in North Anhui was 1,119.52 billion yuan, up by 3.6 percent; that of Dabie Mountain  Old Revolutionary Base Area in West Anhui was 452.83 billion yuan, up by 3.9 percent; and that of International Culture and Tourism Demonstration Zone in South Anhui was 1273.81 billion, up by 3.8 percent.

The number of newly registered employees in real name in urban areas reached 663 thousand, and 225 thousand new jobs were offered for the reemployment. The registered urban unemployment rate was 2.8 percent at the end of 2019, up by 0.2 percentage point over the previous year. The total number of migrant workers across the province was 19.674 million, of which, 13.421 million worked out of the province.

The consumer prices in 2020 went up by 2.7 percent over the previous year. The prices for food, tobaccos and liquor increased by 8.4 percent, and those for retail goods rose by 1.6 percent. The producer prices for industrial products declined by 0.9 percent and the purchasing prices for industrial producers was down by 1.5 percent. The producer prices for means of production for farm products rose by 4.8 percent.

II. Agriculture

The total output of grain in 2020 was 40.192 million tons, down by 0.9 percent over the previous year. Of this total, the output of summer crops was 16.719 million tons, up by 0.9 percent; that of autumn grain was 22.561 million tons, down by 1.7 percent. The output of oil-bearing crops was 1625 thousand tons, up by 0.7 percent, that of cotton was 41 thousand tons, down by 26.2 percent.

At the end of 2020, 14,193 million pigs were registered in the total stocks, up by 30 percent over the previous year. 21,505 million pigs were slaughtered, down by 6.2 percent. The total output of pork, beef, mutton and poultry in 2020 was 3.95 million tons, down by 1.4 percent. The total output of eggs was 1.842 million tons, an increase of 9.2 percent. The production of milk was 376 thousand tons, up by 11.5 percent.

By the end of 2020, the total power of agricultural machinery had been 68 million kilowatts, an increase of 2.2 percent over the previous year. In 2020, the total high-standard farmland was 49.50 million mu. The effective irrigation area[9] was 4.6035 million hectares, an increase of 31 thousand hectares and another 42.1 thousand hectares of farmland was newly equipped with water-saving irrigation systems.

III.  Industry and Construction

By the end of 2020, the industrial enterprises above the designated size had amounted to 18,369. The value added of industrial enterprises above the designated size increased by 6 percent over the previous year, ranking the province the 6th place nationwide. In terms of ownership, the value added of the state-owned and state-holding enterprises grew by 6.6 percent, that of the share-holding enterprises went up by 5.8 percent and that of the enterprises by foreign investors and investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan grew by 9.8 percent. In terms of sectors, the value added of the mining industry grew by 6.1 percent, that of manufacturing was up 6.5 percent and that of the production and supply of electricity, heat power, gas and water rose by 0.1 percent. In terms of industries, the value added of 26 out of the 40 industries continued to increase. The value added for manufacture of computers, communication equipment and other electronic equipment went up by 22.4 percent. for manufacture of automobiles up by 15.3 percent, for petroleum oil, coal and other fuels up by 14.3 percent; for manufacture of raw chemical materials and chemical products up by 13.5 percent; for coal mining and washing up by 8.1 percent. Among industrial products, the output of micro computer equipment, mobile telephones and automobiles grew by 37.4 percent, 4.7 percent and 23.8 percent respectively.

The profits made by the industrial enterprises above the designated size in 2020 were 229.42 billion yuan, an increase of 5.1 percent. In terms of ownership, the value added of the state-owned and state-holding enterprises were 68.32 billion yuan, up by 8.2 percent, that of the share-holding enterprises were 200.98 billion yuan, up by 4.5 percent, that of the enterprises by foreign investors and investors from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan were 24.78 billion yuan, up by 11.6 percent and that of private enterprises were 68 billion yuan, down by 2.4 percent. The cost of the revenue per 100 yuan of industries above the designated size was 85.08 yuan, an increase of 0.04 yuan compared with last year, while the operating margins was 6.05%, increasing by 0.09 percentage point.

In 2020, the value added of construction enterprises in Anhui was 403.27 billion yuan, up by 5.8 percent over the previous year. By the end of 2020, the number of construction enterprises qualified for general contracts and specialized contracts had reached 5,878, an increase of 1304 over the previous year. In 2020, the floor space of housing construction was 493.77 million square meters, up by 7.656 million square meters; that of completed housing construction was 146.063 million square meters, down by 11.004 million square meters.

IV. Service Sector

In 2020, the value added of the wholesale and retail trades was 351.67 billion yuan, up by 1.7 percent over the previous year; that of transport, storage and post was 197.07 billion yuan, up by 0.8 percent; that of hotels and catering services was 69.81 billion yuan, down by 7.6 percent; that of financial intermediation was 255.39 billion yuan, up by 6.7 percent; that of real estate was 310.09 billion yuan, up by 2.4 percent; that of information transmission, software and information technology services was 88.86 billion yuan, up by 18.2 percent and that of leasing and business services was 107.5 billion yuan, up by 0.4 percent. The revenue of the enterprises above the designated size in service sector increased by 6.8 percent. The business revenue of other profit-making services above the designated size represented by emerging industries such as Internet information technology and business services rose by 10.9 percent.

In 2020,the total freight traffic was 3.74 billion tons, up by 1.7 percent. The freight flows were 1,020.92 billion ton-kilometers, down by 0.1 percent. The volume of freight handled by ports throughout the year totaled 540 million tons, down by 2.5 percent. In 2020, the total passenger traffic was 330 million persons times, down by 45.3 percent over the previous year. The passenger flows were 72.86 billion person-kilometers, down by 39.9 percent. The number of passengers handled by civil aviation airports in Anhui was 10.329 million person-times, down by 32 percent, of which that handled by Hefei Xinqiao International Airport was 8.594 million person-times, down by 30 percent.

The total number of motor vehicles for civilian use had reached 9.909 million by the end of 2020, up by 8.6 percent, of which private-owned vehicles numbered 8.725 million, up by 9.3 percent. The total number of cars for civilian use stood at 5.573 million, up by 8.3 percent, of which private-owned cars numbered 5.299 million, up by 8.7 percent. By the end of 2020, the total length of expressway, first-class highway and railroad lines opened to traffic had reached 4,904 km, 5,773 km and 5,159.4 km respectively, of which that of the high speed railroad lines in service had been 2,329 km.

The turnover of telecommunication services totaled 505.48 billion yuan in 2020, up by 26.2 percent over the previous year; and that of post services was 60.84 billion yuan, up by 38 percent. The number of express delivery reached 2.2 billion, up by 42.5 percent and the revenue from express delivery reached 17.5 billion yuan, up by 26.5 percent over the previous year. By the end of 2020, there had been 68.702 million phone subscribers in Anhui, 63.107 million of which were mobile phone subscribers. Mobile phone coverage reached 99.1 sets per 100 persons. By the end of 2020, fixed broadband networks subscribers had numbered 21.452 million, up by 2.331 million, while fixed broadband networks fiber optic cables users reached 19.556 million, up by 2.383 million. The mobile internet traffic in 2020 was 6.15 billion gigabytes, up by 33 percent.

The year 2020 saw 693 thousand inbound visitors to Anhui, a year-on-year decrease of 89.4 percent, of which, 440 thousand were foreigners, down by 88.4 percent; 253 thousand were Chinese compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan, down by 90.9 percent. The number of domestic tourists totaled 470 million, down by 42.6 percent. The total revenue of tourism were 424.05 billion yuan, down by 50.3 percent. Of this total, foreign exchange earnings from tourism topped 270 million US Dollars, down by 91.9 percent, and the revenue from domestic tourism totaled 422.15 billion yuan, down by 49.1 percent. The tourist revenue earned by Wannan International Tourism and Culture Demonstration Zone totaled 216.73 billion yuan, down by 51.1 percent. By the end of 2020, there had been 625 tourists spots at Grade A level or above in Anhui.

V. Investment in Fixed Assets

The total investment in fixed assets of the province in 2020 increased by 5.1 percent over the previous year. Of the total investment, the investment in the technical transformation in industry was down by 0.9 percent; that in infrastructure up by 10.6 percent; and the private investment up by 0.8 percent. In terms of sectors, the investment in the primary sector and the tertiary sector rose by 34.8 percent and 9.3 percent respectively, and that in the secondary sector declined by 4.3 percent. The industrial investment decreased by 4.3 percent, of which that in manufacturing was down by 5.6 percent.

In 2020, the investment in real estate development was 704.23 billion yuan, up by 5.6 percent over the previous year. Sale area of commercial buildings was 95.341 million square meters, up by 3.3 percent; the sales totaled 734.61 billion yuan, up by 7.7 percent. At the end of the year, the floor space of the commercial buildings for sale was 15.417 million square meters, up by 0.7 percent.

Key projects are progressing in an orderly manner. 3778 provincial key projects including Hefei Metro Line No.6, solar batteries and components of Risen Solar Technology in Chuzhou, research and manufacturing bases of AMOLED touch-screen modules and 5G smart terminals in Luan have been started. 1826 provincial key projects including the Shangqiu-Hefei-Hangzhou high-speed railway, Hefei-Anqing high-speed railway, Taitan new energy industry park in Bengbu and phase two of the manufacturing base for industrial smart robots in Wuhu have been completed.

At the end of 2020, the coal production capacity reached 126.96 million tons. The installed capacity of electricity had been 78.16 million kilowatts, of which, the electricity produced by coal was 51.429 million kilowatts, and that produced by new energy and renewable energy was 24.69 million kilowatts.

V. Domestic Trade

In 2020, the total retail sales of consumer goods reached 1833.37 billion yuan, a growth of 2.6 percent over the previous year. An analysis on different areas showed that the retail sales of consumer goods in urban areas stood at 1510.21 billion yuan, up by 2.4 percent and that in rural areas reached 323.16 billion yuan, up by 3.9 percent. Grouped by consumption patterns, the retail sales of commodities was 1635.33 billion yuan, up by 3.8 percent, and that of catering industry was 198.04 billion yuan, down by 6.3 percent.

the designated size, the retail sales of food and daily use increased by 10.5 percent and 4.9 percent, grain and oil up by 10.9 percent, meat, poultry and eggs up by 24.3 percent, clothes down by 4.5 percent, daily necessities up by 6.9 percent, traditional Chinese and western medicines up by 5.2 percent, household appliances and audio-video equipment up by 3.6 percent, furniture down by 6.2 percent, telecommunication equipment down by 6.6 percent, building and decoration materials up by 10.1 percent, motor vehicles up by 4.2 percent, petroleum and petroleum products down by 1.7 percent.

VI.  Foreign Economic Relations

The total import-export volume in 2020 reached 78.05 billion US dollars, up by 13.6 percent over the previous year. Of this total, the value of goods exported was 45.58 billion US dollars, up by 12.8 percent; and the value of goods imported was 32.46 billion US dollars, up by 14.6 percent. Grouped by export commodities, the export sales of mechanical and electronic products and high and new-tech products rose by 17.9 percent and 19.4 percent respectively.

Imports and Exports of Anhui 2016-2020

In 2020, the number of projects with the investment over 100 million yuan by investors outside of Anhui amounted to 5,955, with the actual paid-in fund this year reaching 1,410.47 billion yuan, up by 12.5 percent over the previous year, among which, the number of projects with the investment over 100 million yuan by investors from Shanghai, Jiangsu and Zhejiang reached 3,493, with the actual paid-in fund totaling 749.05 billion yuan, up by 16.8 percent.

The newly established foreign-investment projects were 393, up by 12.9 percent; contracted foreign capital was 5.17 billion US dollars, down by 78.1 percent; the foreign direct investment actually utilized

was 18.31 billion US dollars, up by 2.1 percent. At the end of 2020, the number of top 500 overseas enterprises investing in Anhui grew  to 89.

In 2020, the newly–signed contract value of contracted overseas engineering projects was 2.81 billion US dollars, up by 31.4 percent over the previous year; the accomplished business revenue was 2.5 billion US dollars, down by 25.2 percent. The number of labor forces sent abroad was 6,329, down by 37.8 percent. 103 enterprises (agencies) from Anhui were newly established in foreign countries with the actual outward investment of 1.44 billion US dollars, up by 5.6 percent. Specifically, Anhui investors invested 250 million US dollars in countries and regions along the Belt and Road, down by 7.1 percent.

VIII. Finance and Financial Intermediation

The Provincial general public budget revenue reached 321.6 billion yuan in 2020, up by 1 percent over that of the previous year. Fiscal expenditures were 747.1 billion yuan, up by 1.1 percent. In terms of major items of expenditure, the expenditures for social security and employment went up by 8.5 percent, for urban and rural community affairs down by 25.5 percent, for science and technology down by 2.1 percent, for education up by 3.2 percent. A total of 121.36 billion yuan was spent in 33 livelihood projects.

In 2020, the aggregate financing to the real economy (AFRE) (flow) reached 925.12 billion yuan, an increase of 198.76 billion yuan over 2019. Savings deposit in Renminbi in all items of financial institutions totaled 5,989.78 billion yuan at the end of 2020, an increase of 551.99 billion yuan or 10.2 percent. Loans in all items totaled 5152.05 billion yuan, an increase of 723.12 billion yuan or 16.3 percent.

Funds raised by listed enterprises in domestic stock exchanges in 2020 amounted to 35.16 billion yuan, a decrease of 7.75 billion yuan compared with the previous year. Of this total, 20 A-shares were newly issued, receiving 12.96 billion yuan; the refinancing of A-shares ( including rationing shares, public newly issued, nonpublic newly issued and warrants) received 10 billion yuan; the listed companies financed 12.2 billion yuan through convertible bonds and corporate bonds. By the end of 2020, there had been 126 listed companies in Anhui with the total market value of 1877.2 billion yuan, up by 43.6 percent over the previous year.

The premium received by the insurance companies totaled 140.35 billion yuan in 2020, up by 4.1 percent over the previous year. Of this total, property insurance premium amounted to 47.095 billion yuan, up by 4 percent, and life insurance premium 93.26 billion yuan, up by 4.1 percent. Insurance companies paid an indemnity worth of 47.74 billion yuan, up by 13.9 percent, of which, property insurance indemnity was 27.96 billion yuan, up by 16.5 percent, and life insurance indemnity 19.775 billion yuan, up by 10.5 percent.

IX. Living Conditions and Social Security

In 2020, the annual per capita disposable income of the permanent residents in Anhui was 28,103, increasing by 6.4 percent over the previous year, or a real increase of 3.6 percent after deducting price factors. In 2020, the annual per capita disposable income of the permanent residents in urban area of Anhui was 39,442, increasing by 5.1 percent over the previous year, or a real increase of 2.5 percent after deducting price factors. The per capita consumption expenditure of urban households were 22,683 yuan, down by 4.6 percent , of which, the expenditure for food, tobacco and alcohol was down by 0.3 percent, for clothing down by 12.2 percent, for housing up by 1.6 percent, for household facilities, articles and service down by 7.3 percent, for transportation and communication down by 6.8 percent, for education, culture, entertainment down by 18.5 percent and for health care down by 1.2 percent. The Engel’s coefficient of urban households was 32.6 percent, up by 1.4 percentage points. The per capita floor space of urban households was 42.1 square meters, up by 0.3 square meters over the previous year.

In 2020, the annual per capita disposable income of rural residents was 16,620 yuan, up by 7.8 percent over the previous year, or a real increase of 4.8 percent after deducting price factors. The per capita consumption expenditure of rural households were 15,024 yuan, up by 3.3 percent , of which, the expenditure for food, tobacco and alcohol was up by 8.2 percent, for clothing up by 2.9 percent, for housing up by 2.4 percent, for household facilities, articles and service up by 1 percent, for transportation and communication down by 2.7 percent, for education, culture, entertainment down by 3.3 percent and for health care up by 10.1 percent. The Engel’s coefficient of rural households was 34.3 percent, up by 1.6 percentage points. The per capita floor space of rural households was 54.6 square meters, up by 1.1 square meters over the previous year.

At the end of 2020, a total of 12.835 million people participated in in basic endowment insurance program for urban workers, 34.901 million people participated in social pension insurance program for urban and rural residents. 5.642 million people participated in unemployment insurance program and 153 thousand people received unemployment insurance payment of different terms. A total of 6.839 million people and 6.53 million people participated in work accident insurance and maternity insurance respectively.[11] At the end of 2020, a total of 67.05 million people participated in basic medical insurance.

The year of 2020 saw 344 thousand urban residents and 1.837 million rural residents receiving government subsistence allowances, and 346 thousand rural residents receiving five-guarantees supporting.

X. Education, Science & Technology and Culture    

By the end of 2020, there had been 21 institutions offering postgraduate programs, 115 institutions of higher learning in Anhui, 298 vocational secondary schools (technician training schools excluded). There had been 661 senior secondary schools, 2,846 junior secondary schools with the enrollment rate of 99.98 percent and 7,464 elementary schools with the enrollment rate of 99.99 percent.

By the end of 2020, There had been altogether 4.35 million technicians of all categories, with 4500 thousand high-level talents. Of 7,074 research institutions of science and technology, there were 1,288 ones established by large and medium enterprises. 262 thousand professionals were engaged in scientific work. 

There were many national large-scale scientific facilities including Experimental and Advanced Superconducting Tokamak, China's Steady High Magnetic Field Facility and Synchrotron Radiation Lab, 175 key labs at provincial level or above with 12 national ones, 534 engineering (technical) research centers at provincial level or above with 9 state-level ones. There are 20 provincial high & new technology industrial development zones, including 6 state-level ones. There were 8.559 new and high-tech enterprises with 1,923 ones newly established.

In 2020, achievements of science and technology were made in 20,168 projects, of which 953 projects were supported by financial funds.  119.70 thousand patents were authorized, an increase of 45 percent. By the end of the year 2020, the number of patents in force had been 98.2 thousand. The turnover of export technical contracts was 74.24 billion yuan, up by 64 percent, while that of the import technical contracts was 113.12 billion yuan, up by 85.4 percent.  

By the end of 2020, there had been 1,530 qualified inspection agencies, including 23 state inspection centers. There were 42 organizations for product quality and management system certification ( branch offices in Anhui included ), and the number of enterprises completing compulsory certification was 1,067. A total of 226 authorized measurement institutions enforced compulsory inspection on 3.081 million measurement instruments in 2020. 44 international standards, 3.100 national standards and 2,984 local standards had been developed or revised by the end of 2020. There were 81 geographical indication products at state level and 769 thousand licensed brands.

In 2020, the Mapping and Archives Museum of Anhui Province provided the public with 37,811 maps of varied scales, 3060 survey-mapping data, aerospace remotely sensed data of land covering 3320 thousand square kilometers and 25,581 GB data. The museum produced or updated 30,710 national basic scale topographic maps, monitored geographical conditions of land of 140 thousand square kilometers and updated 1,13.2 GB data on “Map World Anhui”.

By the end of 2020, there had been 123 culture centers[12], 127 public libraries, 219 museums ( private-run museums included) and 1,437 community or township comprehensive cultural stations in Anhui. There were 175 national key cultural relics protection sites, of which 4 sites were covered by national protection program, and 915 provincial key cultural relics protection sites. 88 intangible cultural heritages were included in the state list and 479 in the provincial list.

There were 78 medium wave launchers and relay stations. The radio broadcasting coverage rates were 99.93 percent. There were 7.834 million CATV subscribers and the TV broadcasting coverage rates were 99.9 percent. In 2020, the number of newspaper, periodicals and books issued or published totaled 98[13], 180 and 9,821 varieties, and a total of 560 million copies of newspaper and 36 million copies of magazines were issued, and 290 million copies of books were published. There were 125 national archives with 46.987 million rolls of archives collected, the floor space of which amounted to 525 thousand square meters.

XI. Public Health, Sports and Social Services

By the end of 2020, there were 29,391 medical and health institutions in Anhui with 1,388 general hospitals, 27,400 grass-root medical and health organizations and 481 professional public health agencies and 122 other health agencies. Among grass-root medical and health organizations, there were 1,361 health centers, 1,870 community health service centers and 15,710 village clinics; among professional public health agencies, there were 121 epidemic disease prevention centers, 43 special disease prevention and care centers (stations), 123 maternal and child care centers and 105 health monitoring institutions. There were 412 thousand medical technical personnel in Anhui, including 163 thousand (assistant) practicing doctors and 188 thousand registered nurses. There were 31 thousand doctors and health workers in rural areas. The medical and health institutions in Anhui possessed 408 thousand beds, of which general hospitals and health centers had 318 thousand beds, grass-root medical and health organizations had 790 thousand beds. In 2020, the medical and health institutions treated 370 million person-times in total.

In 2020, athletes of Anhui won altogether 28 gold medals, 38 silver medals and 58 bronze medals at international and domestic games. 5,191 public fitness activities were held in the year, and the number of participants totaled 3.96 million person-times. The per capita sports venue area[14] was 2 square meters. The sales value of sports lottery reached 6.55 billion yuan in 2020.

By the end of 2020, there had been 2,554 social service agencies providing accommodation with 369 thousand beds, adopting 129 thousand people. There were 160 thousand community service institutions with no accommodation. Of this total, there were 9,747 community service stations. The sales value of welfare lottery totaled 4.38 billion yuan and social welfare funds collected reached 1.4 billion yuan.

 XII. Resources, Environment and Emergency Management

There were 128 kinds of mineral resources[15] ( or 165 kinds with minor mineral resources included ) discovered in Anhui, and 108 mineral resources (minor ones included) with definite amount of reserves, including 2 energy species, 23 metal species, 81 nonmetal species and 2 hydro sphere species. In 2020, the geologic investigation institutions carried out 277 research projects at provincial level. Another 10 large and medium size mines with definite resources reserves were newly discovered.  

Energy consumption of industrial enterprises above the designated size increased by 5 percent over the previous year and energy consumption of value-added per unit was down by 0.9 percent.

The investment in ecological protection and environmental treatment industry grew by 76.7 percent. 8 national-level and 30 provincial-level natural protection and reservation districts had been set up. The total area of forests[16] was 4175.3 thousand hectares,  and the storage amount of forests was 270 million cubic meters. The newly-added area of manpower afforestation was 59.6 thousand hectares.

By the end of 2020, there had been 87 environment supervision institutions at provincial, city and county levels in Anhui. The average PM2.5 concentration across the province was 39 mcg per cubic meter, down by 15.2 percent over the previous year. The average ratio of days with fairly good air quality in 2020 in the 16 cities of the province was 82.9 percent, up by 11.1 percentage points over the previous year; the air quality of 5 city met grade-two of the national standard.

Water quality of the Huaihe River flowing through Anhui was better, mainly at Grade III level. Water quality of the Yangtze River through Anhui was better, mainly at Grade II level, and that of its main tributaries was good. The Chaohu Lake was moderately polluted, and major branches surrounding the lake were fairly good. The Xin’an River and its branches were of excellent quality. The quality of 97 percent of urban centralized drinking water source met the standard.
The death toll from work accidents every 100 million yuan worth of GDP was 0.03. The death toll for one million tons of coal production in coal mines was 0.045. There happened 10,617 road traffic accidents in Anhui in 2020.
