Fengyang Phoenix Painting

Phoenix painting, named after its birthplace Fengyang County, has a history of more than 600 years. It is said that phoenix painting appeared in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368). After Zhu Yuanzhang proclaimed himself emperor and established the Ming Dynasty (1368-1644), skilled craftsmen from all over the country were recruited to build the imperial city and the palace in Fengyang County. The craftsmen carved a large number of exquisite dragons and phoenixes on the walls and gates of the imperial city and on the stone bases of other buildings.
Fengyang phoenix painting belongs to traditional Chinese realistic painting with heavy colors. It is similar to the flower-and-bird painting of traditional Chinese paintings. The phoenix in this kind of painting is very different from that in other local paintings. It has the head of a snake, the back of a turtle, the beak of an eagle, the legs of a crane, nine tail feathers and eighteen flight feathers.
In 2006, phoenix painting was listed as one of the first intangible cultural heritage items of Anhui province.
